Crossing cultural borders

‘My parents are Indonesian. I was born in Hong Kong and returned to Indonesia. I came to Hong Kong to study and settle down with my family after I was in the third year of primary school. I became exposed to football when I was in the third year of secondary school and I became a Hong Kong representative and participated in international competitions. In college, I was selected as a striker and won the championship with my teammates. The achievements and the social circle established in Hong Kong are important milestones for me to identify myself as a Hongkonger. I look forward to leading more ethnic minority girls in Hong Kong to try football because I believe that through football, they have more opportunities to learn about different cultures and build their identity through the process.’— Sonia
